Why Tarleton State Is MMH’s 2026-27 UAC Sleeper
2026-10-27
Tarleton State is MMH's 2026–27 United Athletic Conference sleeper, but the label needs context. Blue Ribbon places the Texans seventh. MMH projects third at 10–6. The supplied Bart Torvik screenshot is more optimistic still, placing Tarleton first at 11–5.
This is a case for substantially outperforming the yearbook's expectation, not a claim of universal neglect. An official UAC preseason coaches' poll could not be verified at the October 27 research cutoff and is marked N/A. An independently published forecast is not relabeled as a conference vote.

A credible answer at the point changes the rebuild
Caleb Blackwell gives Tarleton a reasonable way to organize a lineup assembled from several programs. He averaged 10.6 points and 2.9 assists in 30.3 minutes at UTEP across 28 appearances. His earlier college stops at Alabama A&M and South Plains add experience, but the UTEP line is the actual 2025–26 evidence.
The strongest argument is not that Blackwell will suddenly become an overwhelming scorer. It is that a guard accustomed to a substantial workload can help the other transfers receive the ball in useful situations. A rebuilt roster with several complementary scorers is more credible when the lead-guard role has an experienced candidate.
Franck Emmou brings 7.2 points from Texas State, TJ Cope 8.3 from New Orleans and Isaac Harrell 7.4 from Elon's final cumulative report. They supply different perimeter and forward possibilities without requiring the offense to run through the same player every time. Tarleton can succeed through balanced contributions instead of needing all three to become stars.
The interior has options rather than one narrow answer
JaVar Daniel arrives from West Georgia after averaging 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 31 games. Those final-season numbers supersede the slightly different partial line in his new biography. His rebounding gives the projected starting five a needed source of possession recovery.
Fresno State transfer Jac Mani averaged 6.0 points in 11.9 minutes, while Utah transfer Josh Hayes adds another experienced interior option. Their prior roles support the possibility of useful minutes, but neither should be assumed to reproduce a larger workload at the same efficiency automatically. The coaching staff has to identify which combination best protects the lane, rebounds and leaves enough room for the guards.
Trey Harris offers another offensive possibility after averaging 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds at Division II West Virginia State. He may become more important than a reserve designation suggests. The transition still matters: smaller-college scoring is evidence of ability, not a direct forecast of UAC output.
The returning guards keep the roster from being a complete restart
Leroy Kelly IV and Kade Douglas return after averaging 5.8 and 5.3 points, respectively. They give Tarleton alternatives around Blackwell and some familiarity with the program's expectations. Their value may be most visible when a new starter is struggling, in foul trouble or unavailable.
A ten-player projection is not a promise of an evenly distributed rotation. Blackwell, Emmou and Cope could absorb most of the creation, or a returning guard could earn a larger role. The appeal is that Tarleton can make those decisions from a group with genuine college experience instead of depending on several untested freshmen to fill every gap.
What must improve for a top-three finish
The first requirement is defensive communication. Experience at other schools does not create shared coverage rules. The second is shot quality when Blackwell sits or is denied the ball. The third is rebounding from the perimeter and forward positions so that interior contests become completed defensive possessions.
Tarleton also needs to avoid the usual transfer-roster trap of treating prior-school scoring averages as additive. Minutes and touches are finite. A successful group will accept that some players contribute through screening, recovery, passing and defense even when their individual scoring is smaller than before.
MMH's 10–6 forecast gives Tarleton substantial credit for experience without adopting Torvik's first-place ceiling as the baseline. Central Arkansas has more continuity, and Austin Peay has the more established returning inside-out pairing. The Texans can challenge both if Blackwell organizes well and the frontcourt settles. Even a third-place finish would meaningfully outperform Blue Ribbon's seventh-place call, which is the specific expectation behind this sleeper selection.
