2026–27 Big Ten Sleeper: Indiana

Indiana is MMH's Big Ten sleeper. That means a credible opportunity to outperform the surrounding expectations, not a hidden championship prediction. MMH projects the team 7th, with a 11–9 conference record. Blue Ribbon places it 7; the published poll comparison is included in the full preview.

Key players: Markus Burton; Bryce Lindsay; Jaeden Mustaf; Aiden Sherrell; Samet Yigitoglu.

Darian DeVries has addressed the most obvious weakness from his first Indiana season: the Hoosiers can now put considerable size on the floor. Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell supplies shot blocking and mobility, while SMU transfer Samet Yigitoglu adds a large interior target and rebounder. Their presence should make Indiana less dependent on winning every perimeter scoring exchange.

Markus Burton is the other major reason to buy the improvement case. His Notre Dame production provides evidence that he can create against high-level defenders. Bryce Lindsay adds shooting and experience, Jaeden Mustaf offers positional flexibility, and Darren Harris has a chance to expand beyond the role available at Duke. Trent Sisley's development gives DeVries another frontcourt choice. This remains a rebuild, and fitting several former lead options together takes time. MMH nevertheless puts Indiana seventh, above the independent media poll's ninth, and selects it as the sleeper because the personnel changes directly address identifiable basketball problems. A top-five ceiling depends on ball security and a defense that benefits fully from the new size.

Why the improvement case is credible

Indiana's appeal begins with complementary jobs. Burton can attack, Lindsay can supply shooting, and the incoming big men offer targets and protection around the basket. DeVries does not need every addition to become a leading scorer. He needs a group that makes each other's opportunities easier. That is a more useful basis for improvement than treating every transfer's previous production as automatically additive.

What would make the pick fail

The size is helpful only if Indiana can defend with it. Opponents will test the big men in space and try to turn slow recovery into open perimeter shots. On offense, playing multiple interior options requires enough shooting and movement to preserve Burton's driving lanes. A roster can look balanced by position while still struggling to fit together possession by possession.

The path above the projection

MMH starts Indiana seventh rather than declaring it a championship contender. A move toward the top five would require a dependable defensive identity and efficient possessions when opponents prevent the first drive. Watch how often the Hoosiers finish a stop with the rebound and how quickly the ball moves after Burton draws help. Those are more revealing signs than an isolated high-scoring night.

The question to watch

Can the new guards and big men turn improved personnel balance into a coherent half-court offense?
