Why Georgetown Is MMH's 2026-27 Big East Sleeper
2026-10-07
Georgetown is MMH's Big East sleeper because the gap between its preseason placement and its roster ceiling is unusually large.
Bart Torvik places the Hoyas 10th in the Big East, and the official coaches poll also has Georgetown 10th. Yet Torvik gives Georgetown a 69.6 talent rating, second in the conference behind UConn.
The backcourt has real upside
Jaland Lowe is the swing piece. His 2025-26 season at Kentucky was interrupted by shoulder trouble, but in 2024-25 at Pitt he averaged 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists.
Vyctorius Miller adds size and scoring after averaging 10.8 points at Oklahoma State. Elmarko Jackson gives Ed Cooley another athletic guard, while Kayvaun Mulready provides continuity.
Caleb Williams matters
Williams averaged 8.8 points and 5.1 rebounds and made 37.7 percent of his three-pointers last season. He can fill several roles around the new guards.
The frontcourt is deeper
Chol Machot averaged 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks at Charleston and was the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Josiah Parker averaged 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds at FAU and was the American's Rookie of the Year. Vince Iwuchukwu gives Georgetown another legitimate center.
Why MMH still starts Georgetown ninth
The Hoyas have a large number of new pieces. Lowe is returning from injury. Roles have to be defined, and Georgetown must prove it can close tight games after going 3-9 in games decided by six points or fewer last season.
But ninth is a baseline, not a ceiling.
If Lowe looks like an All-ACC caliber guard again and the frontcourt defense translates, Georgetown can finish considerably higher than the preseason polls suggest.
