2026-27 Metro Sleeper: Why Saint Peter's Can Beat Seventh

Saint Peter's is MMH's Metro sleeper for 2026-27.

The Peacocks finished second in the conference at 14-6 last season. The coaches now place them seventh. That change is understandable after roster turnover, but it also creates an opportunity to examine whether the current team has a better foundation than the preseason label suggests.

MMH projects Saint Peter's fifth at 12-8. Blue Ribbon has the Peacocks sixth; Torvik places them seventh in conference order (No. 285 nationally) and projects a 10-10 league record. MMH's 12-8 outlook is two wins above that Torvik record, based on the guard and wing fit. The case for exceeding those positions begins with experienced guard play, a potential new scorer and defensive flexibility. It also has a clear limit: the new frontcourt must prove that it can finish possessions and protect the rim.

Bryce Eaton makes the team easier to organize

Eaton averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season. He returns as a unanimous preseason first-team selection, which is meaningful recognition on a team picked seventh.

A returning point guard can reduce several problems at once. Eaton already knows Bashir Mason's expectations, can organize the offense and has experience making decisions against conference defenses. Saint Peter's does not have to introduce a new lead ballhandler while simultaneously installing the rest of its rotation.

The next step is more consistent scoring pressure. The Peacocks need opponents to respect Eaton as a scoring threat without turning him into a guard who must create every shot himself.

Ken Walker supplies a different offensive possibility

Walker averaged 21.3 points per game at Division II Davenport, shot 36.7% from three and 90.3% at the foul line. Those are his historical numbers, not a forecast of what he will average in the Metro.

The useful part of the profile is that he has handled a substantial scoring role and produced from more than one area. If that translates, Eaton has another guard who can finish a possession after the first action fails.

There is risk. Walker is 5-11, the competition changes and the ball will be shared with other veterans. Saint Peter's does not need him to reproduce 21 points per game. It needs him to provide efficient scoring within a team whose defensive identity remains important.

The wing rotation creates choices

Bryson Wilson averaged 9.9 points and 4.4 rebounds at Binghamton and brings Division I experience. Elijah Perkins supplies familiarity with the program and perimeter defense. Shaedon Simpson is another returning option.

Akil Watson's return from an injury absence offers size, and Xavier Thomas adds a skilled forward after averaging 16.3 points at Division II Saginaw Valley State. Mason can choose combinations that emphasize defense, ballhandling or scoring rather than depending on one lineup to perform every job.

The practical value is flexibility. The Peacocks can use Perkins when a defensive assignment matters, Wilson for positional size, or another scorer when the offense needs help. That does not guarantee a better defense, but it gives the staff plausible ways to build one.

The frontcourt is the swing factor

Jonathan Noudjihidi brings size from UC Davis, but his last season included only three appearances. Trey Patterson adds experience after stops at Villanova and Rice. Bourgeois Tshilobo supplies another physical option from Weber State.

That is a collection of possibilities rather than a proven high-production interior.

The concern becomes more important because Zaakir Williamson is not on the current published roster. Blue Ribbon discussed a waiver application. This preview does not assume approval or count him in the projected rotation.

Without leaning on Williamson, Saint Peter's must find adequate rebounding, interior defense and finishing from the players currently listed. A good perimeter defense loses some of its value if an opponent collects a second shot after the first miss.

Elijah Perkins, Xavier Thomas, Trey Patterson, Bourgeois Tshilobo and Shaedon Simpson are additional rotation options. The five-man group is an MMH projection, not an announced opening-night lineup. Perkins or another forward could earn a starting place as the staff balances the offense and defense.

What has to go right?

Walker must translate enough of his scoring. Saint Peter's needs an additional efficient creator, especially late in possessions.

Eaton must keep the new pieces connected. His value is larger when his passing creates good opportunities for the incoming scorers.

The interior must hold up. Noudjihidi, Patterson and Tshilobo need to make rebounding and rim defense reliable enough for the perimeter strengths to matter.

The returning players must remain available. Watson's recovery is particularly relevant to the lineup's size and flexibility.

MMH's view

Seventh is a reasonable cautious pick. It is also low enough that Saint Peter's has several identifiable ways to beat it.

The Peacocks have a proven point guard, a transfer with a substantial scoring record and multiple wing options. Their championship argument is less convincing until the frontcourt becomes dependable. Their top-five argument is considerably easier to make.

Fifth is MMH's projection. A higher finish becomes plausible if the new scoring fits Mason's defense and the interior improves. That makes Saint Peter's our Metro sleeper without requiring assumptions about a player who is not currently on the roster.
