FROM MMH

2026–27 SEC Sleeper: Missouri

Missouri is MMH's SEC sleeper. That means a credible opportunity to outperform the surrounding expectations, not a hidden championship prediction. MMH projects the team 6th, with a 10–8 conference record. Blue Ribbon places it 6; the published poll comparison is included in the full preview.

Key players: Jason Crowe Jr.; Jamier Jones; Trent Pierce; Jaylen Carey; Bryson Tiller.

Dennis Gates has the size and scoring potential to make Missouri more interesting than a routine middle-tier prediction. Jason Crowe Jr. introduces high-level freshman creation, Providence transfer Jamier Jones brings a productive attacking wing, and Trent Pierce gives the group a returning scorer with substantial size. Jaylen Carey and Bryson Tiller offer frontcourt options that can help on the glass and handle physical matchups.

The uncertainty is concentrated in important places. Crowe's move from a high-school scoring role to directing an SEC offense requires new decisions, and the surrounding pieces must establish who creates, who spaces and who finishes. Jordan Crawford adds an experienced backcourt alternative, while Toni Bryant and the other reserves give Gates developmental options. MMH selects Missouri as the sleeper and projects sixth, two places above the media poll. The reason is the potential fit of the roster, not a presumption that every highly regarded newcomer will succeed immediately. A top-four ceiling requires the young guard play to mature and the defense to turn its length into completed stops.

A useful combination of size and creation

Missouri's upside comes from giving its young creators several different kinds of support. Jones can attack from the wing, Pierce provides returning size, and Carey and Tiller offer interior options. Crowe does not have to become the answer to every difficult possession for that arrangement to work. The central task is defining responsibilities early enough that the pieces operate as a lineup.

Why the floor is less certain

Freshman creation is an upside argument and a source of volatility. SEC defenses will change coverages, crowd preferred lanes and challenge the first pass out of pressure. Missouri also needs its size to translate into completed defensive possessions. Length that forces a missed shot is less valuable when the opponent collects the rebound or finds an unmarked shooter after a breakdown.

The route beyond sixth

A top-four challenge requires dependable guard decisions and enough defensive consistency to win when the shooting is ordinary. Gates has alternatives, but using a deep roster well requires a stable core as well as tactical flexibility. Watch whether Missouri can get useful touches to its forwards without excessive dribbling and whether the same defensive mistakes disappear over successive games.

The question to watch

Can the freshman-led creation settle quickly enough to make the size and wing talent fully useful?
