Three Mid-Major Matchups You Should Be Watching Saturday

November is when teams begin giving us reasons to believe. Saturday offers three particularly interesting opportunities to learn something about the mid-major landscape: a meeting with potential postseason significance in Memphis, an attractive home date for High Point, and a rivalry game in eastern North Carolina.

These are MMH’s three most intriguing matchups for November 7. All tipoff times are Eastern.

1. VCU at Memphis

3 p.m. ET | FedExForum | ESPN+

This is the day’s first choice because of what both programs hope to become by March. Memphis opened with an 80–76 victory over No. 18 Iowa State. VCU, the preseason Atlantic 10 favorite, began with an 82–72 win over Little Rock. The Rams received votes in the preseason AP poll.

For Memphis, the question is whether an impressive opening night can become a sustained standard. Jayden Reid scored 26 points against Iowa State, while Luke Almodovar added 18 points and eight rebounds. VCU now gets the assignment of disrupting that production in the Tigers’ home opener.

The matchup to watch: VCU’s ball security and transition defense. Live-ball turnovers would give Memphis opportunities to attack before the Rams can establish their defense. VCU needs possessions that finish with a good shot and a chance to organize at the other end.

The road setting adds another layer. A strong performance here would tell us more about VCU than a comfortable home win could. For Memphis, beating a credible Atlantic 10 challenger would give its opening-week success greater substance.

Why it makes the list: This is an early test between two programs with the ambition to matter nationally. The winner gets another useful result; the way each team handles pressure may be just as revealing.

2. Washington State at High Point

5 p.m. ET | Qubein Center | ESPN+

High Point gets a homecoming stage and a visiting opponent with a recognizable national name. The Panthers enter 2–0 after beating Maryland Eastern Shore 63–49. Washington State arrives 0–1 following a 76–61 home loss to Davidson.

Cam’Ron Fletcher supplied 21 points and 10 rebounds in High Point’s most recent win. CJ Brown contributed 13 points, three assists and two steals. That gives the Panthers a productive starting point, although Washington State presents a new test of how that offense holds up.

The matchup to watch: Fletcher’s opportunities around the basket and High Point’s ability to finish defensive possessions. A home crowd becomes a greater advantage when the Panthers can rebound, advance the ball and attack before the visitors are comfortable. Repeated second chances for Washington State would blunt that momentum.

For the Cougars, Jaylen Harrel scored 13 points off the bench against Davidson, while Jamari Williams added 11. High Point will want to make Washington State work for its offense and keep those scoring options from settling into an early rhythm.

Why it makes the list: Home games like this give an ambitious program a chance to attach a tangible result to its aspirations. High Point has the venue and the occasion. Now it has to supply the basketball.

3. UNCW at East Carolina

2 p.m. ET | Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum | ESPN+

Regional familiarity gives this game an edge that an ordinary November matchup cannot manufacture. UNCW leads the series 40–31 and has won three of the last four meetings, including an 85–60 victory last season. East Carolina gets its response opportunity at home.

Both teams won their openers. The Seahawks defeated Division II Mount Olive 101–65; the Pirates beat USC Upstate 83–70. Those results provide starting points, but Saturday should offer a more useful comparison.

The matchup to watch: East Carolina’s creation against UNCW’s ability to control the glass. Cian Medley opened with 14 points and 11 assists for the Pirates, while Kaseem Watson scored 17. UNCW received double-doubles from Patrick Wessler and Gavin Walsh, plus 21 points from CJ Luster II.

Medley’s decision-making could determine whether ECU consistently gets into useful offense. At the other end, the Pirates need to limit extra possessions without losing track of Luster on the perimeter. UNCW’s balance gives ECU several problems to solve rather than one scorer to contain.

Why it makes the list: A rivalry, contrasting offensive threats and an immediate road test for UNCW make this an excellent way to start the afternoon. East Carolina has a chance to change the recent direction of the series; the Seahawks have a chance to reinforce it.

The viewing plan

Start with UNCW–East Carolina at 2, add VCU–Memphis at 3, then move to Washington State–High Point at 5. Three games, three different settings, and three useful early looks at programs worth following beyond opening week.
