2026-27 Patriot League Sleeper: Can Bucknell Beat the Preseason Math?

2026-27 Patriot League Sleeper: Can Bucknell Beat the Preseason Math?

Bucknell is a different kind of sleeper. The Bison are not being overlooked by everyone: Blue Ribbon and the coaches put them sixth. But Bart Torvik's preseason national ratings place Bucknell ninth in the Patriot League, with a projected 7-11 conference record. That difference is where the MMH case begins. A heavily changed roster is difficult to project, and a group of newcomers can be better together than its prior Division I track record suggests.

Why Bucknell is interesting

Rocco Lamuno arrives after averaging 18.5 points per game at Division II Spring Hill. That scoring history does not guarantee a similar output in the Patriot League, but it does show that Bucknell has sought players capable of assuming substantial offensive responsibility. Ludvik Bergseng, Matt Lange, Kellen Welch, Joe Youakim and Anderson Hoctor are among the additional names in the Blue Ribbon roster discussion. The opportunity for John Griffin is to find combinations that create better spacing and more reliable scoring than last year's 6-12 league team.

The upside case

Bucknell does not need to become a dominant offense to surprise. If its new perimeter contributors can keep turnovers manageable, a more balanced attack could turn narrow losses into wins. The Patriot League's middle tier is compact enough that a team projected seventh by MMH can plausibly reach fifth. If the newcomers find a dependable hierarchy before January, Bucknell could be dangerous in the conference tournament.

The reasons for caution

There is a reason Torvik is less optimistic. Much of the roster’s appeal rests on production from other levels or players without an established Patriot League role. Lamuno’s Division II scoring must translate against different size and defensive schemes. Defensive rebounding and point-guard decision-making remain unresolved questions. A roster with intriguing options is not the same as a settled eight-man rotation.

MMH projection

Seventh, 8-10 in league play, with a credible path into the top five. That is not a prediction of a breakout; it is an argument that the market of preseason expectations may be underestimating the range of possible outcomes. Bucknell is the sleeper because the upside is plausible, not because it is guaranteed.

What would change our mind

The first several games should reveal who is trusted to initiate the offense, which newcomers can defend without fouling and whether the Bison can finish possessions with rebounds. If those questions remain unanswered, the lower Torvik forecast may prove closer to reality. If Griffin finds an effective guard pairing and reliable interior defense, the sixth-place consensus could be too conservative.
